Chicago Med Season 3 renewal confirmed; Chicago Fire, PD both renewed

There’s some great news for (most of) the One Chicago family, starting with some Chicago Med season 3 renewal news!

Sources confirm that NBC is bringing back the medical drama featuring Colin Donnell, Torrey DeVitto, and more for a third season after it spent the majority of the spring firmly on the bubble. There was some discussion that either it or Chicago Justice would be canceled, but for now, Justice remains on said bubble. Hopefully, there will be some good news handed its way before we get to the end of the week.

We should also note that both Chicago Fire and Chicago PD were also renewed, but there isn’t really any surprise in that given that both parties are among NBC’s most successful dramas, placing in second and third place behind This Is Us. At the moment, Chicago PD is tied with Law & Order: SVU as the #3 show in the demo. SVU has yet to be renewed, but all signs point to this happening.

One of the reasons why there may have been such a long delay in the One Chicago shows getting renewed is them all being negotiated together in some capacity. There are also more syndication concerns than there were a year ago, when it was thought that this franchise could draw some big figures similar to what the Law & Order franchise has over the years. Unfortunately, the semi-serialized nature of Chicago Fire has made it a little bit harder to sell, and that may have NBC evaluating the franchise a little bit more in terms of its long-term viability.

We are getting a pretty good sense now of what NBC’s overall landscape is going to be this fall. Taken was recently renewed for a 16-episode season 2, and Blindspot is also going to be coming back. Unfortunately, earlier today the network canceled Timeless after the show fell in the ratings throughout the season; Emerald City is also not returning, and Grimm is also over after wrapping earlier this year.
