When will the Once Upon a Time season 7 premiere date be? This isn’t the biggest question coming out of the renewal, but it’s a question.
A mere matter of days ago, the series officially was given a pickup by ABC. Unfortunately, the hammer came after that, as the majority of the cast is not returning. It’s almost repetitive at this point to bring it up again, but in the event you have not heard, the series is set to lose Ginnifer Goodwin, Josh Dallas, Jennifer Morrison, Jared Gilmore, Emilie de Ravin, and Rebecca Mader. They may all return for an episode or two during season 7, but none will be regulars. The only people settling in now to a major role on the show once more are Lana Parrilla (Regina), Robert Carlyle (Rumpelstiltskin), and Colin O’Donoghue (Hook). How the series will work is a question for another time.
For the sake of this post, the primary question is mostly when the show will air. The 8:00 p.m. Sunday timeslot worked wonders for Once Upon a Time for many years, but it’s dying there and the fear is that keeping it in this spot could in turn mean that you are crippling some other shows on the night. With this, it would not be much of a surprise to see the series shifted over to Friday nights at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. Consider that American Idol is coming to ABC in the spring of 2018, and all indications suggest it will air on Sundays. It’s hard to do that if Once Upon a Time is there. Meanwhile, both Last Man Standing and Dr. Ken were canceled, which leaves open a little bit of room for this show to pop in.
Whether or not season 7 is the final one for the show will depend heavily on ratings. There are some situations where it’s possible the show improves in the numbers once it’s free of NFL football / other Sunday night distractions. On the flip side, if it’s on Fridays families have other things going on, and no matter when you air the show, there will be some disgruntled viewers unhappy with the fact that their favorite cast members are gone. Once Upon a Time has an uphill battle if there ever was one in order to stick around on the air. Good luck to it in advance.
